Cuba Street Photography | A Glimpse Of Life In Havana

Last month I had the pleasure of joining three other incredible photographers on a whirlwind street-photography trip to Havana, Cuba.

My personal goals for the trip were to give myself a creative boost, improve my composition skills and learn to see things differently. In other words: I’m learning how valuable and important it is for me to have personal photography projects that have nothing to do with client work. Projects like this trip are both educational and a great creative ‘re-charge’ both personally and professionally.
In an effort to spark creativity and force myself to compose differently, I decided to limit my gear to one camera and one lens – A decision that I worried over, but ended up being really happy with. Eliminating options and choice when it came to my equipment forced me to work the scene differently than I normally may have and literally made me see things through a different perspective.

I can absolutely tell you that we utilized every waking moment of this trip. Alarm clocks would go off at the crack of dawn and we’d head out at sunrise and fill the entire day with photography adventures. At night we’d reconvene over dinner (and Mojitos. obviously.) and critique and give feedback on each other’s work – an exercise that proved to be incredibly beneficial to me.
I’m so very thankful to Jide, Nicole and Matt not only for inviting me on this trip, but also for being so willing to share their time and creative process with me (and each other)!

If you’ve ever considered going to Cuba please go! I’m already planning a return trip. I learned a lot about Cuba and met so many kind and incredible people that were willing to pull up a chair and swap life stories with me. Plus, there’s rum and cigars.
Here’s a look at some of my favorite moments from the trip.

If you have questions or thoughts about Cuba (or anything!)
I’d love to hear them in the comments below.

Bobbie & Drew’s Flinn Block Hall Wedding | Oregon Wedding Photographer

Bobbie & Drew got married on December 30th making their big day the last wedding of the year for me. Just a few short days before, I was rescheduling things because of ice and snow, but on their wedding day we woke up to not only a dry day, but also blue skies and sun!
Pretty awesome when you are comfortable and warm wandering outside in just a wedding
dress…in December! Both the ceremony and reception were held at Flinn Block Hall in Albany.
If you haven’t been you should check it out! The exposed brick and large windows over looking downtown Albany make it such a unique and beautiful place to get married. Bobbie and Drew, along with their families and team of wedding vendors (see the list below) did an incredible job of decorating with raw wood and greenery – the entire place looked so warm and romantic.  I think Bobbie might be the most expressive bride I’ve ever photographed which made the editing process tons of fun because her smile is contagious – there may have been a few times I caught myself sitting in front of my computer screen with a huge grin on my face.
So thank you Bobbie & Drew for spreading joy just by being you two!

I know that you all came here for the photos so I’ll stop talking and let the images tell the story of their day 😉

Prickett Family Christmas Lifestyle Session | Oregon City Family Photographer

A few years ago when my niece Clara was a baby, I asked my sister if we could do a lifestyle
session instead of the traditional posed family photos that she was probably expecting and
hoping for. It turned out adorable, and was so much fun, that when Clara’s brother Jules came
along this year, we decided we needed to do another lifestyle photo session with the family of four!

Lots of life had happened between their first lifestyle session and their second;
new house, new town, new baby, an active 3.5 year old – it really is quite fun, even as an outsider,
to look at the differences between the two sessions! (You can see the first one here)

I recently moved myself and suddenly realized how sad I am that I didn’t do my own lifestyle
session in the home my husband and I lived in for 9 years.

These sessions aren’t about perfection. They’re not about perfectly clean homes.
They’re not about everyone being on their best behavior.
They’re not about faking moments for an instagram photo.

They ARE about capturing personalities.
Freezing little moments in time. Documenting life as it is for you right now.
Showing off the home you live in (even if it’s not your dream house!).
They’re about remembering the splashing toddlers in the bath.
About the family times in front of the Christmas Tree.
They’re about the tickle fights that happen in the middle of reading stories in bed.
And most of all, they are about love, they are about your family and they’re about your little niche in this world.

I want to tell your story and capture moments for your family too! Contact me today to plan your own lifestyle session!

As you’ll see, we did throw in a few outdoor (front yard) posed family photos which is something I’m happy to do at your lifestyle session too if you’d like.
